The Gas Transition team works on gas and electric utility policies, programs, and regulatory filings that facilitate a transition to clean heat in buildings.

Due to aging infrastructure and a focus on replacing leak-prone pipes, gas utilities have increased capital spending by nearly three-fold since 2010. At the same time, state and federal governments, local communities, and public utility commissions are increasingly adopting policies to require or incentivize emissions reductions from gas use in buildings. As economics and evolving policies shift consumption from gas to clean heating fuels like electricity, new capital investments may prove difficult to pay back, especially if depreciated over many decades.
