In a news briefing titled “Metapocalypse,” Earthjustice, the Union of Concerned Scientists and the Alliance for Affordable Energy (AAE) disputed that Louisiana ratepayers would not foot some of the power bill for Meta’s “Hyperion” data center complex.
According to testimony from Edward Burgess, a consultant with Current Energy Group contracted by Earthjustice, ratepayers could be saddled with billions of dollars, partially because much of the operating costs of the plants are not reflected in Meta’s minimum monthly charges. He also said Meta and Entergy structured their deal such that ratepayers would be on the hook for the gas plants if Meta abandons the data center.
