Guest columnists Cathy Clement and Andy McDonald write:

“Fundamental to recent utility rate increases are plans to prop up aging coal plants and build expensive new gas plants. A recent study shows a better, cheaper way to meet our energy needs. The study, conducted by Current Energy Group (sponsored by the Kentucky Resources Council and others), modeled multiple energy pathways that Kentucky utilities could take.

Results show that we can save billions by investing in energy efficiency and renewables, with the amount of savings increasing as world events cause gas prices to rise even higher. By pursuing this “least cost” path, we would not only lower bills but also create jobs and protect our health and climate. The least cost path for ratepayers aligns with the broader public interest.”
